Class Description:  I will be combining some teaching about famous artists and art forms with hands-on art. As the weather cools we will be indoors for a still life painting while they learn about Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, and even Claude Monet. As the weather warms up it will allow us to do some Plein air watercolor landscape painting. The Richland Community Center offers us great views of the river for this. There are some great artists that painted outdoors on location- Winslow Homer, Claude Monet, Thomas Cole, and Albert Bierstadt- to name a few. My love of abstracts will take us to some fun stuff! Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Jasper Johns, and good old Jackson Pollock. We will also do some sketching in pencil and pen looking at artists like Edgar Degas’ ballerinas, Matisse and John Singer Sargent. If time permits, we will do a collage box. I was super thrilled to see a collection of Joseph Cornell’s collage boxes in the Chicago Art Institute last year. There is also a contemporary artist, Virginia McCracken who does some whimsical boxes with a mouse-like character. It’s a fun way to show the students that art can be 3D too.
